They had already experienced a good deal of persecution which caused them to scatter all over the [...] This week we launched a new series on the book of 1st John. When the Apostle John wrote this letter to the Church, she was in her second generation. They had already experienced a good deal of persecution which caused them to scatter all over the Middle East region and now the main problem facing the church a declining commitment to Christ. Many believers were conforming to the world’s standards, failing to stand up for Christ and compromising their faith. People were rising ups as leaders who were no longer teaching the kind Christian faith originally taught by the first Apostles. These were accelerating a downward slide away from Christ. Alarmingly, John finds the church of Jesus Christ, which he has given his life to establish, is full of people who call themselves Christians, but are ill-prepared to be all that this term was meant to entail. If you put it in military terms, John saw the church filling up with enlistee’s who were not battle-ready. They were Christians in name, but when it was time to stand and defend the faith, they aren’t ready for the fight. They were spiritually weak, and vulnerable to enemy propaganda, which he knows can quickly result in mass causalities. He needed to whip them into shape and do it in a hurry. Hence the idea that this book basically represents Christian Boot Camp. To get the ball rolling we need to establish who we’re following and the answer to that should be “Christ: the Life & the Light”. In order to get a glimpse of that we heard testimonies from Wes Carr, Michele Aldridge and Tod Luxton. Each in their own way, and through their own experiences, shared how God has turned their lives upside-down and used difficulties to strengthen their walk with Him.
