As Mark 12 unfolds Jesus meets one form of opposition after the next. Maybe you’re encountering opposition in your life as well. But Jesus doesn’t back down, He is able to see these situations not merely as opposition, but opportunities to reflect God’s love and grace.
First there are the Pharisees and Herodians who want Jesus to weigh in on taxation by Rome. But Jesus uses that conversation to invite everyone to give themselves fully to God.
Then the Sadducees come at him with a scenario to discredit belief in the resurrection and Jesus turns it into an invitation to know the God of scripture and trust His word.
Third, a scribe comes to Jesus with a debate over the rules, but Jesus turns that debate into a in invitation to come and know God more, saying “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” Come closer.
In every opposition Jesus discerned an opportunity and issued an invitation. He wants all of us to give ourselves fully to God, to know God and His Word, and to embrace His Kingdom. Not only can we embrace those things, we can also learn to utilize opposition as an opportunity to reflect God’s glory and grace into the lives of those around us and draw them closer to Him. It’s another way we can “Live Like Jesus.”
