Andrew: The Brother in the Background

“Andrew: The Humble Brother In The Background”

From what we can see in scripture, Andrew is a wonderful model of godly humility. Of the four in Jesus’ inner circle(Peter, John, James, & Andrew), Andrew was the least noticeable. He lived his life in the shadow of his better known brother. Many of the verses that name Andrew add that he was Peter’s brother, as if that was the fact that made him significant. Remember, it was Andrew who brought and introduced Peter to Christ. Andrew would have known that as soon as Peter entered the picture with Jesus, that he would be secondary. But, he brought Peter to Christ anyway. That right there says much about Andrew’s character & heart.

1.) Read 1st Corinthians 1:26-29. What does this text reveal about the kind of people God typically uses to do His work?

2.) Read John 1:35-42. Andrew sought out his brother Simon before telling anyone else of his discovery. What does this say about Andrew’s relationship with Simon? What does it suggest about reaching family members for Christ?

3.) Might Andrew be a better model for most church leaders than Peter? Would you say that the most effective leaders in your church resemble Andrew or Peter? Why?

4.) Most people do not come to Christ as an immediate response to a sermon they hear in a crowded setting. They come to Christ because of the influence of an individual. With God getting the glory, who do you think was influenced by you?

5.) Looking back, what individual (or individuals) do you credit with inviting you to church or sharing Christ with you?

6.) Andrew realized that no gift placed in Jesus’ hands was insignificant. If you were to come to that same realization, how would your attitude toward giving to God’s work be impacted?

7.) Andrew’s decision to follow John the Baptist before he followed Jesus indicates a willingness to commit to a cause beyond himself. What cause(s) would people who know you say you are captivated by?
