I think that most of our issues in life start with feeling vulnerable, afraid or out of control and trying to reassert our will. Maybe you didn’t know it, but that is the foundation of every addiction or unhealthy coping behavior. From cocaine, to food, to obsessive cleaning or even workaholism, we’re constantly trying to feel like we’re in control. To do that we give control to something we think we can manipulate…and before we know it we’re bowing at that throne in worship. When you need a breakthrough, or help, or relief from pain, what are you willing to do to get things back “under control?” That’s a big part of what the church in Pergamum is dealing with.
