“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” – Numbers 23:19
In a world marked by broken promises and shifting commitments, Numbers 23:19 reminds us of a foundational truth about God. He is completely faithful and unchanging. Unlike humanity, God does not speak carelessly or act inconsistently. His words are not influenced by fear, pressure, or regret. What He declares, He accomplishes.
This verse was spoken in a context where human intentions clashed with God’s purposes. Yet it makes clear that no force – human or spiritual – can undo what God has spoken. His promises are not dependent on circumstances or people’s faithfulness, but on His own character. Because God is not like us, we can trust Him fully.
God’s faithfulness gives believers deep assurance. When God promises forgiveness, He forgives. When God promises new life, He gives it. When He promises to be with His people, He never abandons them. Even when we struggle with doubt or inconsistency, God remains steady and true.
Numbers 23:19 invites us to rest in the reliability of God. It calls us to take His words seriously, to trust His promises boldly, and to live with confidence that God will always do what He says. In every season – whether joyful or difficult – we can anchor our hope in the unchanging faithfulness of the Lord.
