In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. – Genesis 1:1-3
In the very first verse of Scripture, we are introduced to God as the Creator: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Before time began, before anything existed, God was already there. This tells us that God is eternal, sovereign, and purposeful. The universe is not an accident. It was intentionally brought into existence by a God who acts with design and meaning. That same truth speaks over our lives. We are not accidents either. We were created by God, for His purpose, and with His care.
Verse 2 paints a very different picture. “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Here we see emptiness, chaos, and darkness. Yet even in that moment, the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. What a powerful reminder that even when life feels confusing or overwhelming, God’s Spirit is already present. He doesn’t wait for us to get everything in order. God moves right into the middle of the chaos, ready to bring transformation.
And then comes the breakthrough! In verse 3 we read, “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” With a single word, God dispels the darkness. His voice brings clarity, hope, and order. The same God who spoke light into the universe continues to speak light into our lives today. Through His Word, His Spirit, and through Jesus, the Light of the World, God shines into our darkness.
So, whenever we face confusion, emptiness, or fear, we can trust that the God of Genesis 1 is still at work, bringing light and order where there once was only chaos. Isn’t that amazing? The God who brought order to creation is the same God who brings order to our lives today. When our hearts feel heavy, when our families face struggles, or when we walk through uncertain seasons, we can rest in His unchanging nature. He is still the One who speaks light into our darkness and peace into our chaos.
